The comic was first published as a mini-series in 2003, and was later followed by a regular series in 2008. In 2011, it was adapted into an animated television movie for Cartoon Network.

The comic is known for its dynamic artwork, blending traditional comic book style with a distinct, cinematic feel, and for its unique take on the "kaiju" genre. It has received critical acclaim for its approach to teenage angst and issues, with strong character development and emotional depth.
